VP of Development

ROLE:

Reporting initially to the Founder & Executive Director, and then to the incoming President & CEO, the VP, Development is a key part of an exciting, fast-growing, national charity that is making an enormous impact in youth mental health. In this role, you will be overseeing a group of ~15 amazing fundraising staff and will be responsible for the creation and execution of strategies to grow the current $10M revenue budget to ~$15M by 2025, through the solicitation of major gifts, government grants, fundraising campaigns, major fundraising events, and corporate and foundation support. 

While the work involves supporting a network of youth in all provinces and territories, this position is located at the Jack.org headquarters in downtown Toronto. Our staff team is currently working remotely, but we expect most staff will eventually return to working from our Toronto office.

    Strategic Planning & Leadership

    • The VP, Development will work in partnership with the Founder & Executive Director (as he transitions to the “Founder” role), focusing on the larger relationships and campaigns. The VP will also engage with the Founder and the Board of Directors in supporting the development of a robust pipeline of corporate, institutional, and individual prospects. 
    • The VP will also:
      • Be a key part of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT).
      • Oversee key activities related to campaign planning, prospect and donor development, volunteer management, and donor stewardship.
      • Develop and implement a two to five year strategic vision for the Development department.
      • Partner with the Director, Government & Foundations and Director, Individual Giving & Supporter Relations to develop annual and multi-year strategies to achieve goals and objectives of all fundraising portfolios.
      • Partner with different stakeholders to identify and maximize cross-functional/cross-market opportunities in alignment with Jack.org’s vision, mission, and principles.

    Donor/Partner Relations & Stewardship

    • The VP, of Development, will:
      • Oversee the prospecting and maintenance of robust pipelines for all of Development’s donor/partner segments.
      • Lead and oversee the execution of an annual stewardship and communication plan by identifying key communication vehicles and events for existing and potential donors/partners (this will involve partnering with our amazing Content & Communications team).
      • Cultivate relationships with existing and new prospects, working cooperatively with other Development team members in the process of prospect management and clearance.
      • Effectively and successfully integrate Jack.org’s mission, strategic plan, annual priorities, and case for philanthropic support in achieving organizational goals with prospects/supporters.
      • Represent Jack.org at public speaking engagements as necessary.
      • Work with the Founder to engage Board members to support fundraising activities, meeting face-to-face with strategic and VIP current and potential donors/partners to discuss giving interests and opportunities as necessary.

    Team Leadership

    • Oversee a team of ~15 individuals (and growing) in total, initially with 3 direct reports: Director, Government & Foundations; Director, Individual Giving & Supporter Relations, and Lead, Development Enablement.
    • Support the professional goals and development opportunities of the team by providing coaching and counselling via mentoring, one-on-one meetings, and regular performance appraisals.
    • Lead diverse teams with a strong understanding of EDI approaches such as unconscious bias, intersectionality, and perspective-taking, as well as community-based fundraising.
    • Understanding, communicating, and enforcing Jack.org’s principles, policies, guidelines, and practices.
    • Lead, coach, and mentor direct reports to achieve stated individual portfolio objectives.
    • Develop and lead an engaging people and performance management plan for the Development team.
    • Develop a 3-5 year human capital resource plan to scale to achieve stated objectives in the strategic plan.

    Cross-Functional Collaboration

    • Responsible for ensuring that all development initiatives are evidence-based, evaluated regularly, and that recommendations impacting future giving opportunities are developed and implemented in partnership with cross-functional teams. 
    • Partner with the Content & Communications department to ensure appropriate brand representation and adherence across all fundraising initiatives including advertising, social media, direct mail, campaign/event websites, and other external communications.
    • As a member of the ELT, provide thought partnership on the organization’s 2-5 year strategic direction and support to other org-wide strategic initiatives as required.
    • Stay apprised of advancements and changes pertinent to the fundraising and development profession.
    • Working with the Fundraising Committee of the Board, liaise with the Committee chair on strategic discussions related to fundraising strategy to execute the organization’s strategic plan.
    • Partner with the Fundraising Committee to engage all Board members in leadership and legacy giving, prospect development, and revenue growth.
    • Responsible for Fundraising Committee deliverables, including preparation of pertinent documentation, setting agendas, and drafting Committee briefs for the Board of Directors.

    Operational Fiscal & Integrity

    • Define KPIs that align with Jack.org’s annual plan and strategic goals, and track the success of the Development team’s work.
    • Oversee the execution of prospecting plans and organizational strategy that are integrated into our database system.
    • Flag progress deviations towards strategic goals (accelerated/decelerated achievements) and connect with direct reports monthly to understand key factors and mitigants (as applicable).
    • Oversee Development department expense and revenue budgets and partner with the Finance and Operations teams to ensure all Development activities are on time, on budget, and advise Founder & Executive Director regarding strategic deviations from the plan. 
    • Build upon a branding strategy that supports all fundraising and programming efforts.
    • Stay apprised of advancements and changes pertinent to the fundraising and development profession, ensuring the appropriate professional development of the overall Development team.
       

Skills and Requirements

    • At least ten (10) years of non-profit leadership experience, with at least five (5) in the fundraising and fund development spaces in progressively senior leadership positions, and in senior leadership role(s) overseeing operational and performance outcomes.
    • A strong desire to fit in with and lead an already happy, effective, high-functioning fundraising team, with a focus on culture, values, and a human-first approach.
    • Verified track record of managing all aspects of fundraising, including high net worth relationships, in a fast-paced nonprofit environment with a track record of closing major gifts/transactions at the $500K+ and multi-year levels.
    • At least five (5) years of experience working closely with C-Suite leadership, including individuals at the Executive Director/President & CEO level and Board members.
    • Strong emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to develop and maintain relationships. 
    • A willingness to collaborate with the organization’s Founder on key relationships and strategic priorities.
    • A strong understanding of data utilization and management, as well as the effective use of fundraising technology/data for strategic operations and decision-making.
    • Ability to work independently and cross-functionally and develop relationships with colleagues across departments.
    • Excellent written and oral communication, presentation and negotiation skills.
    • Intermediate proficiency with fundraising tools such as Salesforce, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Raisin, iWave, and Pardot (or equivalent).
    • Willingness and ability to travel domestically for donor engagement.
